Description
This is a K6 telephone kiosk dating from 1935. Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, it is a standardised design constructed of painted red cast iron with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied crowns are present on the top panels, and rectangular white display signs read “TELEPHONE” beneath the shallow-curved roof. The kiosk contains modernised internal equipment and is in good condition.
The kiosk sits within a hedgerow alongside the main road through the village, situated between Wayside Cottage (Grade II), approximately 10 metres to the south-east, and Thorn and Appledore Cottages (Grade II), approximately 10 metres to the north-west. This placement creates a strong visual relationship with these other listed buildings.
The K6 design was developed from Scott’s earlier K2 design of 1924, presenting a more streamlined and cost-effective solution for widespread production. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were made, and while many were replaced in the 1960s, they remain an iconic feature of the British streetscape. Giles Gilbert Scott was a significant 20th-century architect, known for works including Liverpool's Anglican cathedral and Battersea Power Station.
The K6 telephone kiosk at Coffinswell is designated at Grade II, reflecting its position between two listed buildings and its status as a representative example of this important 20th-century industrial design within a village setting.
