Description
Orchard Way and 2 Court Barton Cottages are two cottages that were originally one house, built in the 17th century. They were likely divided in the 19th century and have been extended and modernised in the 20th century. The cottages have rendered rubble and cob walls, topped with a hipped thatched roof. There is a rendered, probably brick, axial stack on the right, which was originally a gable end stack. The original layout was a three-room and through-passage plan, with the gable end stack on the right-hand side, likely serving the inner room (2 Court Barton Cottages). The hall probably originally had an axial stack. At the rear of the inner room fireplace, there are newel stairs.
The building is two storeys high. Orchard Way, on the left, features a roughly symmetrical front with two windows, both of which are 20th-century two-light casements, while the ground floor on the right has a three-light window. There is a 20th-century plank door at the centre, sheltered by a flat door hood. To the right, 2 Court Barton Cottage has an asymmetrical front with two windows, one on the ground floor, featuring 20th-century two-light casements, and a three-light window to the left on the ground floor. There is a recessed two-storey extension on the right-hand side with a 20th-century plank door.
Inside, Orchard Way has undergone extensive modernisation in the late 20th century, with very few original features remaining. In 2 Court Barton Cottage, there is a cross beam and lintel over the fireplace in the former inner room, both of which are chamfered with hollow step stops. The cottage also features wooden newel stairs and a roof, likely from the 19th century, with straight principals and lapped collars.
