Description

Wayside Cottage is a cottage dating from the mid to late 17th century, with 20th-century extensions. It has cob walls rendered with a thatched roof, and rendered rubble gable end stacks. The original plan comprised two rooms, both heated by gable-end fireplaces; a central lobby entrance was formed through the insertion of stairs into the original passage. The cottage has two storeys. The front has a regular two-window arrangement of late 19th or early 20th century casement windows with glazing bars, the ground-floor windows being wider. A late 20th-century thatched porch with a glazed door sits centrally, with buttresses on either side of the porch and spaced regularly along the front and rear walls. A lower, slate-roofed 20th-century extension is attached to the right, with a flat-roofed extension beyond. The interior of each ground floor room features chamfered cross beams with hollow step stops, and modernised open fireplaces with wooden lintels. The roof structure was largely replaced in the late 20th century, except for one A-frame truss with straight principals and lapped collar. An iron gate with cast iron reeded standards is located to the left of the lower gable end. Local tradition suggests the cottage was once a rectory.
