Description

Butstone Cottage is a cottage dating from the mid to late 17th century, with additions and alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features plastered cob and rubble walls, and a thatched roof that is gabled at the right end and half-hipped at the left. There is a projecting rendered rubble stack with a brick shaft at the right gable end, and a 20th-century brick shaft at the left end.

Originally, the cottage had one heated room on the right, possibly with a rear outshut, and an integral barn on the left that had external access only. There is an 18th-century outbuilding or service wing located behind the barn. The outshut behind the right-hand end was heightened in the 20th century, and the barn was converted into domestic accommodation in the late 20th century.

The exterior is two storeys high, with an asymmetrical four-window front. The left side features two late 20th-century small-paned casements, with the first-floor windows being half dormers and a large four-light window occupying the former cart entrance. There is a late 20th-century thatched porch to the right of the centre. The right side has earlier 20th-century two and three-light casements. The rear elevation includes a single-storey wing to the right and a two-storey lean-to to the left.

Inside, the right-hand room has an open fireplace with a roughly chamfered wooden lintel and a cloam oven. The rear doorway features a 17th-century chamfered wooden frame with ogee stops. The roof timbers over the barn ends have been partly replaced, but otherwise consist of rough straight principals with lapped collars.
