Description

Key Cottage is a small house dating from the mid to late 17th century, with a 19th-century addition. It features rendered cob and rubble walls and a thatched roof that is gabled at the left end and hipped at the right. There are two brick stacks, one axial and one at the left gable end. The layout consists of a three-room plan, with the two rooms on the right heated by the axial stack and the left-hand room heated by the stack on its end wall. A 19th-century outshut has been added along the rear wall.

The cottage is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with three windows. There are two half-dormers on the first floor, which are late 20th-century two-light casements, and below are smaller 20th-century two and three-light casements. A 20th-century lean-to porch is located towards the left end, featuring a stable-type door, while a similar door is found to the right under a slate door hood.

Inside, the central room has a chamfered wooden lintel inscribed with the date 1799. The right-hand room has a rebuilt fireplace. The roof structure, which may date to the late 17th century, consists of straight principals with collars pegged onto them.
