Description

Denford is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 16th century, featuring a mid-19th century addition. The building has rendered walls, likely rubble in the front range and cob in the rear wing, topped with a gable-ended slate roof. There are two gable-end brick stacks on the front range and a rendered brick stack located between the rear wing and the front range.

The oldest part of the house is the rear wing, which is believed to be a truncated version of a larger structure. This wing now consists of a large heated room and a small dairy at the end, possibly representing the hall and inner room of a three-room plan house. The new front block, added around the mid-19th century, is positioned at right angles to the original house and contains two equally sized rooms with a central stairhall. At this time, the rear wing was likely relegated to service use. There is also a 19th or early 20th-century outshut built against the outer face of the rear wing and the left end of the 19th-century range.

The exterior is two storeys high, featuring a symmetrical three-window front with mid-19th century 16-pane sash windows, and a central first-floor window with 12 panes. Below this window is a pedimented doorhood with a moulded cornice and a probably contemporary wooden lattice porch that shelters a six-panel door. The left-hand end has the aforementioned outshut, while the rear wing includes a 20th-century sash window and a central 19th-century stone porch.

Inside, the main room of the old wing features a chamfered axial beam and an early wooden doorframe to the dairy with a cambered head. The 19th-century front range retains its six-panel doors, panelled shutters, and a staircase with stick balusters and a heavy turned newel.
