Description
Higher Cottage and Rose Cottage are a pair of cottages located in Petrockstowe, dating from the early 18th century with a 20th-century addition. They feature rendered cob and rubble walls and a gable-ended thatch roof, with a brick stack at each gable end. The cottages have an unusual mirror image layout, where each cottage has a larger heated outer room and a smaller service room at the center, overlapping at both the front and back, a configuration that also continues on the first floor. A 20th-century outshut has been added to the left-hand end.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front. Rose Cottage, on the right, has three windows consisting of 20th-century two-light casements and a large 20th-century glazed porch at the center. Higher Cottage, on the left, has no windows on the front but features a lean-to 20th-century glazed porch to the right and a 20th-century outshut at the left-hand end. Inside, no original features are visible in either cottage, but fireplaces and beams may be concealed. The feet of rough straight principals can be seen on the first floor of Rose Cottage.
