Description

A group of four attached cottages, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, with 19th-century additions. They are constructed of plastered cob walls with a gable-ended thatched roof, and feature three brick stacks – one at each gable end and one axial. The original plan was likely L-shaped, with two cottages forming each wing, although the left-hand wing may originally have been a single house. Each cottage now consists of a principal heated outer room and a small inner room, except for Nos. 3 and 4, which comprise the right-hand wing and each contain only one room with 19th-century outshuts at the rear.

The front of Nos. 3 and 4 has an asymmetrical window arrangement of 2:2, with mainly early 20th-century 2-light casements. No. 4 has a 19th-century part-leaded pane casement on the first floor to the left, and a 3-light casement below a 20th-century plank door. To the right adjoins a circa early 20th-century part-glazed door to No.3. Nos. 5 and 6 project from the left end of No. 4, with No. 5 situated on the corner, presenting a small frontage with a 2-light 19th-century leaded pane casement above a plank door. No. 6 has small 2-light casements on the first floor – 20th century to the left and partially 19th-century leaded pane to the right – with a 20th-century part-glazed lean-to porch below. The interior of No. 5, which was inspected, contained a small brick open fireplace with a chamfered spine beam with run-out stops, and rough straight principal rafters. It is likely that similar features, such as open fireplaces and original ceiling details, survive in the other cottages.
