Description
Parnacotts is a pair of cottages that were formerly a farmhouse, dating from the early 17th century but altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottages have rendered cob and rubble walls and a gable-ended slate roof. There are brick stacks at either end, with the left-hand stack on a projecting rendered rubble base and a front lateral stack of similar construction. The original layout featured a three-room-and-through-passage plan, likely with the lower end to the right, but later subdivisions have obscured the exact arrangement. The hall is heated by the front lateral stack and has an integral window bay beside it, along with a 19th-century rear outshut.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front. The windows are mid to late 20th-century two and three-light casements without glazing bars, except for early 20th-century three-light casements on the ground floor to the left and right of the centre, with the left-hand one located in the projecting hall bay. There are 20th-century glazed doors to the left and right of the projection, and a lean-to against the right-hand end also features a glazed door at the front.
Inside, the right-hand cottage has a heavy chamfered and step-stopped beam in the main room. The roof structure above consists of two principal rafters with curved feet, trenched purlins, and morticed cranked collars, showing no signs of smoke-blackening. The left-hand cottage does not exhibit any early features, but some may be concealed, and its roof structure has been replaced.
