Description
Chestnut Cottage is a small house, likely dating to the mid to later 17th century and currently undergoing restoration. It has walls of partly rendered rubble and cob, with a thatched gable roof. Two rendered chimney stacks are present, one at the left gable end and the other axial, seemingly constructed of stone rubble. The house appears to have an original two-room plan, with a possible cross passage or entry directly into the left-hand room. The left-hand room is heated by a gable-end fireplace, while the right-hand room has an axial fireplace. A lean-to addition was constructed in the 19th century at each end of the house. The exterior features a two-storey, asymmetrical two-window front with 20th-century two- and three-light casement windows. A gabled 20th-century porch is located to the left of centre, sheltering a 19th-century plank door. Lean-to additions are present along the end walls. Although inaccessible at the time of survey, the interior may contain original open fireplaces, ceiling beams, and possibly roof timbers.
