Description

The garden walls at South Hill are kitchen garden walls dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. They are primarily constructed of brick, with some sections made of stone rubble. The walls form a complete quadrangle located immediately east of North Hall Cottages, which are not included in the listing. The area is enclosed to the north and east by a hedgerow and a fossel about 5 meters wide. The north and south sides of the walls extend approximately 20 meters, while the west side measures 60 meters and the east side 85 meters.

The walls on the west, south, and east sides are built in brickwork, predominantly using English bond, although the west wall features some Flemish bond. The north wall has stone rubble on the outside but is lined with brick on the inside. The copings are made of brick or rendered brick or stone. On the west side, there is a central opening flanked by a pier with a flat segmental head. The east side has a small opening with a segmental head, and there is also a lean-to structure consisting of two rooms with a central door and openings on either side, facing into the gardens.

The plinth on the east side has a moulded offset brick that rises to about 1.5 meters. Various external piers project slightly, and the walls rise to approximately 3.5 meters at the highest point, which is at the swept-up north-west corner, while elsewhere the height ranges from 2.5 to 3 meters. There are two rating buttresses near the west end of the north wall. At the time of inspection in April 1988, the interior space was heavily overgrown, and the internal surfaces were only partially visible. Much of the brickwork appears to be high-quality work from the 18th century.
