Description
Hatiches is a pair of cottages that were likely originally one house, dating from the early to mid 17th century and possibly extended in the 19th century. The building features plastered cob and rubble walls with a thatched roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. There is a projecting plastered rubble stack at the right gable end with a brick shaft, as well as a brick axial stack.
Currently, the cottages consist of two rooms in the left-hand cottage and one room in the right-hand cottage, which has a 20th-century wing added to the rear. It is believed that the original house had a two-room plan with a hall to the left, and the axial stack may have backed onto a passage. The room to the left of the hall may have been an unheated inner room or a 19th-century addition when the house was divided.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front featuring three windows. The windows are early 20th-century casements, with two lights on the first floor and three lights below. Each cottage has a 20th-century rustic timber open-fronted porch, one located to the right of center and the other towards the left-hand end. There are early 20th-century plank doors behind each porch, and the left side of the front is recessed. The 20th-century wing is located behind the right-hand end.
Inside No. 1, which is the left-hand cottage and the only one accessible, there are plastered ceiling beams and part of a simple 17th-century moulded plaster cornice on the first floor. One 20th-century roof truss is visible, while the others are plastered over and may be earlier, but access to the roof space is not available.
