Description

Bowden Park Cottages is a pair of cottages that likely originated in the 17th century but have been significantly altered and extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. The cottages feature rendered cob and rubble walls and a gable-ended thatched roof. There are brick axial stacks, a projecting rendered rubble stack at the right gable end, and a brick stack at the gable end of the rear wing.

The plan is complex, consisting of three different ranges. Two of these are parallel, with a rear wing extending at right angles. The front range is probably the oldest, with a two-room layout that may have originally included a passage. The left room is heated by an axial stack, while the right room is heated by a gable end stack. There is a projecting bay at the front of the left room. A wing at the rear of this range is likely a 19th-century addition. Another range, which is parallel to the front, extends to the left. This addition is unusual in its positioning and lacks internal access for further investigation, but its external appearance suggests it may date to the 18th century or possibly earlier. The division into two cottages is not entirely clear, with one entrance located on the left side of the front range and the other in the rear wing.

The exterior is two storeys high, featuring an asymmetrical front with two windows, which are mid-20th century two-light casements, except for a three-light window in the central projection. There are two early 20th-century porches with brick piers, one on each side of the projection. The parallel rear range projects at the left-hand end and has a gabled wing adjoining it. The interior was inaccessible during the survey but may include features of interest such as open fireplaces, ceiling beams, and possibly early roof trusses.
