Description
Sages is a pair of houses, originally constructed as one, dating from the early 19th century with a mid-19th century addition. The building features stucco walls and a hipped slate roof, along with two brick axial stacks. The original layout consisted of a four-room plan at the front with a central stair hall and service rooms at the rear. It has since been divided into two houses, with the stair hall incorporated into the left-hand unit. A small wing, likely built in the late 19th century, is attached to the right-hand end.
The exterior is two storeys high, presenting a symmetrical five-window front that retains its original fenestration. On the first floor, there are three 16-pane sash windows at the center, flanked by smaller 12-pane sash windows at each end. The ground floor features French windows on the left and right, with tall 16-pane sashes on either side of a central double six-panelled door topped with a rectangular fanlight. A simple verandah runs along the front wall, supported by plain wooden posts. Set back from the right-hand end is the small hipped roof wing from the late 19th century, which has decorative glazing on its windows and door.
The interior was inaccessible during the survey but is likely to contain well-preserved original joinery. Additionally, there is a low stone wall in front of the garden that rises at the side to form a tall stone gateway, complete with a drip course and cornice above the door, which features a decorative geometrical design.
