Description

The Union Inn is an inn located on Fore Street in Dolton, dating from the 17th century with an addition from the early 19th century. The building features plastered rubble and cob walls, topped with a gable-ended slate roof. The taller section of the inn has a brick stack at the left gable end and a rendered rubble stack with a brick shaft at the right gable end, along with a rear lateral stack for the lower range.

The original layout is not entirely clear, but the earlier range on the right consists of one main heated room and likely extends at the right end, although it may have been truncated or rebuilt at the left end in the early 19th century. The newer block on the left has a symmetrical plan with two rooms and a central entry.

The exterior is two storeys high. The taller early 19th-century block on the left has a symmetrical three-window front featuring early 19th-century 16-pane sash windows, along with two contemporary bay sash windows on the ground floor. There is a central pilastered doorcase with 19th-century panelled double doors and a rectangular fanlight above, topped with a 19th-century iron lamp. The lower 17th-century range on the right has an asymmetrical four-window front with late 20th-century one, two, and three-light casements, and a 19th-century plank door to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
