Description

Hilliers is a house built around the 1830s, with later alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of stuccoed stone rubble and some cob, topped with a slate hipped roof featuring deep eaves, although the eaves brackets are missing. The house has rendered chimney stacks on the sides, each with moulded yellow clay pots. The layout is a double-depth plan, with the main rooms on either side of a central entrance-stair hall and service rooms located at the back. The rear ranges are believed to be remnants of an earlier house.

The exterior is two storeys high, presenting a symmetrical three-bay front on the southeast. The first floor features 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has two 19th-century canted bay windows, which have been updated with 20th-century casements that replaced the original sash windows. The central entrance is accentuated by a Tuscan portico and has glazed and panelled doors. An extension at the rear projects on the northeast side, featuring twin gables and a late 20th-century garage in the angle.

Inside, the original layout and much of the joinery have been preserved, including panelled doors with moulded architraves. The large central stair hall boasts an open-well open-string staircase, adorned with ornate cast-iron balusters and a moulded mahogany handrail that is wreathed over the curtail. Some rooms have panelled window shutters, and the kitchen contains cupboards with panelled doors. The front right-hand room features a lincrusta frieze, although the chimneypieces have been replaced. The house also has king-post roof trusses with curved struts, making it a fine example of a late Georgian house with an impressive staircase.
