Description

Forge Cottage and Yew Tree Cottage are a pair of cottages dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. They are constructed of rendered cob and feature a hipped wheatstraw thatched roof with brick stacks.

The left-hand cottage has a principal room with an end stack on the left and a smaller unheated room to the right, which has an entrance at the front and a winder staircase at the rear. The partition between these rooms has been removed. The right-hand cottage has an external end stack to the right and is likely a mirror image of the left-hand cottage.

Both cottages are two storeys high and present an asymmetrical three-window front, with late 19th century or early 20th century two and three-light wooden casements. There are two roughly central recessed doorways with 20th century boarded dados, accessed by steps. A very small 20th century window is situated between the doors, possibly in an earlier opening. The right-hand return front features a projecting curved bread oven to the right of the stack, with a lean-to roof. There is a 20th century two-light wooden casement on the first floor to the right, along with a 20th century boarded door below, which has a wooden lintel.

Inside the left-hand cottage, there is a 20th century spine beam in the left part, an old stone open fireplace with a wooden lintel, and a bread oven with a cast-iron door. A doorway to the rear has been blocked, and there is an old winder stair in the right-hand rear corner. The roof space has not been inspected. The interior of the right-hand cottage has also not been inspected.
