Description

Sunny View is an 18th-century smithy, later converted into a cottage, located on a corner plot in Church Street, Beaford. The building was altered in the early to mid-20th century. It is constructed of rendered cob, with a rendered plinth, and has a thatched roof that is gable-ended on the left and hipped on the right. Brick stacks are present. Originally a smithy with only a doorway and a single ground-floor window to the front, it was converted into a cottage with the insertion of additional windows, likely between the World Wars. A first floor may have existed originally, even if only partial. The right-hand stack is believed to be original, while the left-hand stack is a later addition. The building is two storeys high and, externally, has asymmetrical window placement with four windows to the first floor and two to the ground floor. The ground-floor windows are mostly early 20th-century three-light wooden casements, as are those on the first floor. A doorway, off-centre to the left, has a 20th-century six-panelled door and a late 20th-century glazed gabled porch. An early 20th-century three-light wooden casement is found on the right-hand return front. The interior has not been inspected. An old photograph documenting the building’s appearance before conversion is held in the Beaford Archive.
