Description

Nos. 1 and 2 are a pair of cottages dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are constructed of cob with a stone plinth and are rendered under a thatched roof. The left cottage (No. 2) has a gable end, while the other cottage has a half-hipped end. Both cottages are two storeys high. The left-hand cottage is the older of the two and stands slightly forward, with a further projection to the right of its porch. A wide doorway on the right leads into a single room that no longer connects internally to either cottage. No. 1 features a single two-light window beneath eyebrow eaves, directly above a thatched central porch, and has two two-light windows on the ground floor. The external appearance of No. 1 has been altered following a partial collapse of its end wall. The left-hand end of No. 1 has a two-light timber casement with 15 leaded panes per light, while all other casements are from the 20th century. No. 2 has an external end stack, and No. 1 has an external back lateral stack. Inside No. 1, the right-hand room has two axial beams that are chamfered with step hollow stops, and there is another beam in the present rear corridor. No. 2 also has two similar beams. There are remains of a 17th-century roof over No. 2, which consists of two principals that are apex morticed and side pegged, but this roof is no longer load-bearing.
