Description

Sprydon House is a large house set in parkland, built in the late 18th century with internal remodelling in the mid-19th century. The exterior is stuccoed and sits on a moulded volcanic trap plinth, topped with a hipped slate roof and brick stacks. The house has a central staircase plan and originally featured two rear wings, which are now partially dismantled. It is two storeys high with a front that has five bays, rusticated quoins, and a cornice with modillions, along with a parapet at the front. All windows are hornless sash windows with blind housings, and those on the first floor are supported by small brackets. The central doorway does not have a portico and features glazed double doors with six panes in each door, topped by a semi-circular fanlight. The left-hand elevation has three bays, with all windows except the one above the porch blocked but still retaining their sashes. The porch is approached by a curved open verandah with a slated roof from the 19th century. The right-hand end of the main range has no window, but there are two sash windows on each floor of the wing, horned above and without horns below. The interior has been considerably altered in the mid-19th century, but original internal panelled shutters remain, along with a dog-leg staircase featuring moulded balusters and a turned handrail, and a 12-pane semi-circular headed stairwell window at the top. Sprydon House was formerly known as Sprydon Cote.
