Description
Chapel Court is a cottage that may include parts of one of the medieval chapels-of-ease in the Broadclyst parish. It dates back to the 15th century and has undergone later alterations and additions. The building is constructed from well-coursed volcanic trap rubble and features a thatched roof with gabled ends. There is a brick stack on the left-hand end and an axial stack towards the right side of the building; the axial stack is positioned above a thick internal wall, which is marked externally by a vertical masonry joint, possibly indicating the end of a 3-bay chapel, of which two jointed crucks remain.
The front of the cottage has two window ranges, with both upper windows featuring two lights in thatched gabled dormers, the right-hand casement dating from the 19th century with eight panes per light. The ground floor has two windows with two and three lights under timber lintels, along with a door beneath a 20th-century open porch. At the rear, there is a catslide roof over a continuous outshut. Inside, there are two jointed crucks with chamfered blades, while the wall plate and purlins appear to be later additions. The left-hand downstairs room includes one heavily chamfered beam.
