Description
Bearegate Cottage is a cottage that dates back to the 15th century, with additions from the 17th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of cob with a stone plinth, rendered, and features half-hipped thatched roofs. The 19th-century wing is made of brick and has a similar roof. The building has a medieval range that shows signs of a smoke-blackened roof, but it has been altered too much to determine its original layout. This range is positioned end-on to the road, while a 17th-century wing extends at a right angle, creating an L-shaped plan. A 19th-century brick wing fills the inner angle of the L-plan.
The front of the older range has a two-window arrangement to the right of a large external stack with a bake-oven projection and a brick chimney. All four windows are 2-light, with six panes per light, dating from the 19th century, and those above are set under eyebrow eaves. The left end features a tiled and boarded porch beneath a 2-light window. The roadside front includes a large external stack and a 1 and 2-light timber casement window. There is also a pantiled porch at the right end and another 2-light window. The rear of this range, where it is not obscured by the 19th-century wing, has one 2-light window under eyebrow eaves.
Inside, the main fireplace has a chamfered lintel with run-out stops. The roof features one smoke-blackened closed truss, which is morticed and side pegged at the apex, along with part of a diagonal ridge-piece.
