Description

The Old Post House is a cottage that likely dates back to the early 17th century, with parts rebuilt in the 18th century, including a new roof, and some changes made in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble, partly rendered and whitewashed, with a straw-thatched roof that has half-hipped ends. A tall rendered front lateral stack rises from the eaves.

The layout consists of a single room depth with a central passageway, although the rear doorway has been blocked, likely in the 19th century. There are two rooms on either side of the passage; the left room, which is the higher end, is heated by the front lateral stack and includes an integral bread oven. The right room is unheated and was later divided, probably in the 19th century, with a plank partition creating a modern kitchen at the right end. It is likely that the right half of the house was rebuilt in the 18th century, and there is a small late 19th-century addition with a lean-to roof at the right end.

The exterior features two storeys with asymmetrical fenestration. The entrance front has a 1 and 2-light 19th-century casements on the ground floor, with close-set glazing bars and small panes. On the first floor, under the eaves, there is a 2-light 18th-century iron casement with square-paned leaded lights to one side. The gable end facing the roadside has a 2-light 19th-century casement on the first floor and a 20th-century casement on the ground floor. The door is located directly to the right of the projecting bread oven and is a 19th-century plank door. The rear elevation has two 19th-century casements and one 20th-century casement.

Inside, the fireplace in the left ground floor room is blocked and has a 20th-century grate. The right ground floor room features a deep chamfered and unstopped axial ceiling beam. The first floor is divided into three small rooms. The roof is from the 18th century and has straight principals with hipped ends, though the ridge is not visible.
