Description

Nos 151 and 152 are a pair of cottages located in Lower Slerra, Higher Clovelly, dating from the late 17th century with some alterations from the 19th century. The cottages feature a rubble ground floor and a first floor that is rendered, likely made of cob. They have a gabled thatched roof with undulating eaves and end brick ridge stacks, with the left stack resting on a rubble base. The right gable is capped with slate.

The plan consists of a single room depth with two large end rooms, each having gable end stacks. There is a central lobby and staircase, and the room to the left has been later subdivided into two, with the larger room on the left forming a separate dwelling with its own entrance.

The exterior is two storeys high with a 1:2 window arrangement. The first floor features two-light 19th-century casements with glazing bars, while the ground floor has a two-light and a three-light 19th-century casement, along with a 20th-century casement on the right. There are two door openings: a plank door on the left and a panelled door on the right, which has glazed panels at the top, both from the 19th century. A mono-pitch slate roof covers the left side, supported by rubble, while the right side has a mono-pitched double-roman slated hood on wooden brackets, extending to the left where there may have been an entrance to a third cottage that is now part of the two. There are also 19th-century lean-tos at each end, featuring mono-pitch corrugated asbestos roofs.

Inside, the ground floor room on the left has an unchamfered axial ceiling beam, while the room on the right has two rough-chamfered axial ceiling beams and a large fireplace with an unchamfered lintel.
