Description

The property comprises two cottages situated 30 metres southwest of Wrinkleberry School, originally a single house built in the early 17th century. It was altered in the 18th century when it was divided into two dwellings, and again in the 19th century with the addition of a room at the right end and replacement of the windows. The walls are stone, rendered and colourwashed, with a gabled roof covered in Delabole slate and rag slates across four pitches. Four chimney stacks feature 19th-century brick shafts.

The original plan was of three rooms and a through-passage. The left-hand section was initially the kitchen, featuring a gable-end fireplace with an oven. The room to the right of the passage had an axial stack backing onto the passage, and there was an inner room at the right end. During the 18th-century division, the through-passage was blocked, becoming an entrance lobby at the front and a pantry to the rear. The lower room was converted into a single-room cottage, incorporating the passage, and a new staircase was built to the first floor. The upper two rooms were converted into a second cottage, with a hall and staircase inserted in the former inner room, and the staircase renewed in the 19th century. A further room was added to the right end in the 19th century, accompanied by an inserted chimney stack. The front of the right-hand portion of the building was also extended, likely in the 19th century.

The exterior presents two storeys with a 1:2:1 window arrangement on the first floor, featuring 1 and 2-light 19th-century casement windows. Two door openings contain 19th-century plank doors, one with a ledge hood. Inside, the room on the extreme right of the ground floor has a gable-end fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintol featuring ogee-bar stops and an oven. The central room has a chamfered axial beam with ogee stops. The roof appears to have been renewed in the 18th century.
