Description
The Methodist Church, built in 1845 as a Wesleyan chapel, features squared Plymouth rubblestone with rendered and freestone dressings and a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with high aisles and a five-bay nave, along with a church hall located at the rear right. The exterior is characterized by plain lancet windows and three forward-facing gables. The outer, lower gables include quatrefoil windows at the apexes above large lancets that have moulded hoods and engaged columns on the sill string course. The central bay features a similar three-light window above a pointed arch with a hoodmould, an impost string, and a plain intrados leading to 20th-century glazed double doors. The facade and its returns are enhanced by offset buttresses, with the ones flanking the door topped by tall octagonal spirelets and steep plain octagonal pinnacles. The central gable is adorned with a pierced cross within a circle. Inside, the shallow barrel-vaulted roof is supported by cast-iron octagonal columns with moulded caps. Curved braces along the sides create arcading for the aisles, and while there are mostly 20th-century fittings, some pews appear to be original. This church is an interesting example of a non-conformist chapel in a simple Gothic style.
