Description
The United Reformed Church, formerly a Congregational Chapel, was built in 1846. It is constructed with an ashlar facade facing the road, and English bond brickwork to the rear, with stone dressings. The roof is slate-covered. The building has a three-bay design with a gable facing the road.
The symmetrical facade features a moulded plinth and small, two-stage octagonal clasping turrets at the corners. A doorway is positioned up five stone steps and a half landing, with cast-iron balusters to the railings. The double wooden doors have intersecting blind tracery and a two-centred arch, surrounded by mouldings and an ogee hoodmould with a crocketed finial. Flanking the entrance are two-light stone mullion and transom windows, each with cinquefoiled heads to the lights, a quatrefoil between them, and an ogee-shaped hoodmould with a floriate finial, incorporating patterned leaded lights. A similar two-light mullioned window is above the entrance. A battlemented gable parapet rises from octagonal finials at the eaves, topped with a pendant octagonal finial. A moulded string with floral plaques is located below, at intervals. The sides are buttressed and have windows mirroring those on the front, although without the hoodmould. There are stone dentil eaves. A Sunday school was added to the rear.
Inside, the church has panelled timber ceilings and a gallery over the internal porch. A contemporary source noted its features (D. Verey, 1970).
