Description
No 14 on Broad Street is a house and shop that dates back to the 15th century, with the year 1465 painted on the gable. It has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber-framed gable with white rendered infill, and a brick front on the first floor, topped with a tiled roof.
The structure is one window wide and three rooms deep, with a gable facing the street and standing three stories tall. The street front has an entry on the left, and to the right is a 20th-century shop front with a door positioned right of centre, under a flat timber head. Above this, there is a slightly off-centre two-light casement window with six panes per light, set beneath a cambered brick-on-edge arch.
The building has a slight jetty above, with exposed joist ends, short thick corner posts, and curved braces leading down to the main beam. The framing between the two panels is high, with thin timbers and two four-pane casements in the centre. Above the tie-beam, there are three studs and two angle struts below the collar, with curved V struts above. The year 1465 is painted on the infill. A brick chimney is located on the right return.
Internally, the top beam of the ground floor front and the top beam of the passage wall are preserved in the ceiling, along with other beams. The corner posts and braces of the front wall are exposed inside, with one bay at the back shaped like a jowl on the main post to the left, and two rolls with a scroll above. The side passage was originally wider, and the front is jettied on two levels.
