Description

No. 6 High Street is a house and shop that dates from the 15th to 16th century, built in two in-line phases with its gable end facing the street. There is a 19th-century addition to the north. The building is timber framed and rendered, designed to imitate ashlar, while the 19th-century work is in brick and rendered at the front. The roof is slated at the front, with the rear wing covered in plain tiles. The front gable features scalloped bargeboards and a spike finial. The structure has two storeys, with the front block jettied over the street and to the north, as indicated by a concealed dragon beam. The windows are mainly sash with glazing bars. The doorway to the house includes a six-panel fielded door, an overlight, a pilastered architrave, and a cornice. There is an open porch with a cornice supported by heavy timber columns with fluted caps, and above the porch are French windows. To the left, there is a projecting 12-paned shop window and a mid-20th-century semi-glazed door. Inside, the building has a four-bay frame, with the front two bays being the earlier construction. The upper floor has exposed studs, with those in the front bay painted in red ochre. The gable end facing the street has close studding and a deep sill for an oriel window. The front section features an arched-braced cambered tie beam with a peg for a crown post, although the roof over this section has largely been rebuilt.
