Description

11 Chancery Lane is a house and shop that dates from the 16th to mid-17th century and was built in several phases. The main part of the building runs parallel to the street and features a cross-wing to the right, along with two additional projecting gabled sections. It is constructed with a timber frame and has textured render; the left side wall shows remnants of old panelled plaster with pargetted infilling. The roof is covered with plaintiles, except for the rear slope of the main range, which is pantiled. The building has two storeys and three first-floor 8-paned sash windows. The shop front includes mid-20th century windows and a central doorway. To the left, there is a tripartite sash window with glazing bars and a mid-20th century panelled door. A small stack is located against the side wall of the left wing. There is a 19th-century rear addition made of flint with red brick dressings. Inside, the upper floor features plain studding, except under the centre gable, which has later infilling. The ground floor of the main range has an axial bridging beam with a shafted soffit and square or on-edge joists. There is a lintel from a former fireplace in the main range, although the stack has been removed. A 18th to 19th-century staircase is located in the small rear addition. The roof has not been examined. Historically, the area outside was known as The Shambles, which were butchers' stalls, as recorded in a survey from 1621.
