Description

25 and 27 Chancery Lane are two dwellings that were originally one house, dating from the 16th century. The main block is a three-cell range with a small 19th-century addition on the right. No. 25 includes the hall and service cells of the original range, while No. 27 contains the parlour cell and the 19th-century addition. The buildings are timber framed; No. 25 is roughcast-rendered, and No. 27 is faced in colourwashed brick. Both have a slated roof, while the 19th-century addition features a pantiled roof.

The properties are two storeys high, with an attic in the main block. No. 25 has three 3-light casement windows on the upper floor, each with a single horizontal glazing bar. On the ground floor, there is a 3-light mullion and transom window without glazing bars to the right and a small-paned sash window to the left, along with a 19th-century four-panel door. No. 27 has two large-paned sash windows with segmental arches on the ground floor and two-light small-paned casements above, along with a six-panel raised and fielded door. The main block has an internal stack, with the lower portion of the shaft possibly being original.

Inside No. 25, there is some plain heavy studding, and the hall chamber features a central cambered tie beam, although the braces have been removed. The ceiling joists and roof timbers are concealed, and the interior of No. 27 has not been examined.
