Description

Eureka Cottage, originally one house and now divided into two, dates from the 16th century with alterations from the mid-17th century. The building is timber framed, mostly covered in roughcast render, and has a pantiled roof. It consists of three cells and has two storeys with an attic. The windows are scattered and include various mid-20th century casements. There are two doorways featuring mid-20th century reproduction plank doors and contemporary gabled porches made of brick and timber. The internal stack has a mid-20th century shaft.

Inside No. 14, the interior has been modernized, revealing much of the original structure. It includes two complete bays and part of a third bay, with the remainder belonging to No. 16. The building features widely spaced studs and reverse-curved braces, along with heavy wall posts showing evidence at the rear of tie beam braces that pass through the current floor level, with a small part of one brace still in place. The roof has a queen-post structure with cranked braces, although one tie beam and its associated truss have been removed. The roof was originally half-hipped to the right and included a gablet. The first floor has plain on-edge joists, which, along with the stack, seem to be mid-17th century additions, possibly indicating an adaptation of a non-residential building. The interior of No. 16 has not been examined.
