Description

Amadeus House is a house and shop dating from the 16th century. It has two storeys and attics, with a basic half-H shape, positioned sideways to the road on the southern edge of the churchyard. The building features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, topped with a plain tiled roof and a modillion cornice. An internal chimney stack is located between the main range and the eastern cross-wing, featuring a large plain red brick shaft.

The house includes various early 19th-century mullion-and-transom windows with Gothick hoodmoulds and one gabled dormer. The entrance door, from the 20th century, is framed by pilasters, an entablature, a dentil cornice, and a rectangular fanlight with curved glazing bars. The eastern cross-wing serves as a shop, displaying a mid-19th-century facade that is at a lower level than the rest of the building. This facade is made of red brick, with white brick pilasters and heavy console brackets.

Inside, the plain framing is exposed, with ceilings featuring chamfered main beams and joists set flat. The cross-wing on the west has five bays, and its roof includes clasped purlins, principal rafters, and windbraces, with some rafters showing signs of reuse and smoke-blackening. The roof over the main range has one row of butt purlins and one row of clasped purlins, appearing slightly later than that of the wing. There is no visible evidence that the house had an earlier core. The building also has various blocked original windows and later extensions at the rear.
