Description

31 Market Hill is a shop and office building that dates from the mid-19th century for its front section, while the rear is older, dating back to the late 16th century. The front range has three storeys and features a combination of brick and timber framing, with a rendered finish and plaintiled roofs. The street-facing facade is notable for its heavy applied brickwork, flat pilasters, and a moulded cornice that rises above the eaves. There are two windows on each storey, set in deep reveals, with cast iron moulded and bracketed heads. The top storey has two-light casement windows, while the first storey features large-paned sash windows. The shop windows are plain and double-fronted, with a fascia and a recessed door.

The rear range, which is set at right angles to the front, was originally a separate house but is now integrated into the shop and office space. This section has two and a half storeys and a three-cell plan, constructed of timber framing and rendered, with a plaintiled roof. It includes a gabled stair wing that appears to have been originally jettied, featuring a small-paned sash window with Gothick heads and a flush frame. Additionally, there are three gabled dormers, two of which have spike finials. Some plain timber framing is visible on the upper floor, and the roof structure includes clasped purlins with windbraces in parts.
