Description
The premises of Messrs Carley and Webb, which includes a grocery store and a wine shop, features commercial buildings with a mid-19th century front that conceals an older core. The structure is partly brick and partly timber-framed with a rendered finish. The front range, now three storeys high, has a painted brick facade, while the sides and rear are timber-framed and rendered. A raised brick band between the first and second floor windows indicates the position of the earlier eaves line. The building has a paired bracketed cornice and three sash windows on the upper storeys, each with a single vertical bar in the lights and set in shallow reveals. The ground floor has double-fronted shop windows with a projecting fascia supported by ornate console brackets and recessed double doors. At the rear, there is a gabled wing that is two storeys tall with an attic, also timber-framed and rendered, along with a single-storey 18th-century one-room extension that has a shallow-pitched lead-covered roof. Inside, there is a plaster cornice featuring egg-and-dart ornamentation. These two rear sections are part of the shop premises. Additionally, on the south side of the rear, there is a long range of former outbuildings divided into four separate structural sections, some two storeys and others one and a half storeys, primarily built of red brick with plaintiles. A large projecting hoist is present on part of this range.
