Description
This is a house, built in two phases, now used as a shop and office with flats above. The earliest part dates to the mid-16th century, with later alterations in the 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly to the front facade. It is two storeys and has attics. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with a plaintiled roof and a cove cornice. A projecting fascia covers an underbuilt jetty along the front, and there's an end chimney stack on the left side. The upper storey has three sash windows in flush frames with smaller side lights. There is also a canted, three-light oriel window from the early 19th century. The ground floor has a modern shop front for No. 25, and two matching sash windows to No. 26. The entrance door has six fielded panels and a plain fanlight.
No. 26 retains a basic 16th-century two-cell plan, featuring good timber framing: a ground floor with heavy cross-beams, ogee moulding, and small supporting brackets. The single upper room, spanning three bays, has an embattled cornice, and evidence suggests the original frame was once attached to a now-demolished building, which has been replaced by the later No. 25. The upper ceilings are believed to be original, and the roof, in three bays corresponding to the wall bays, contains clasped purlins. No. 25, likely added in the late 17th century to form a third unit, has no noteworthy interior features. The structure of No. 26 exhibits some of the finest timber framing in Framlingham.
