Description
The building at 16 Market Hill was formerly the Queen's Head public house and is now used as shop premises. It dates from the 16th century and features a front range with later rear extensions that are now separately occupied. The structure is two storeys high and is timber-framed, with exposed timbers and a plaintiled roof. The frame is simple, with a middle rail, and there are signs that it originally extended further on each side. The original roof has been removed, and the walls have been slightly raised, resulting in a present roof that has a lower pitch. On the left side, there is a blocked original doorway with a four-centred arched head, and a passageway has been cut through the framing to provide access to the rear wing, leading around to Fore Street; this passageway is known as 'Queen's Head Passage'. The upper floor features 20th-century two-light casement windows, while the ground floor has a three-light 20th-century shop window and door.
