Description

Nos. 8, 9, and 10 Market Hill is a house that has been converted into shop and office premises, dating from the 16th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, with plaintiled roofs, and consists of two storeys and attics. Nos. 8 and 9 were originally constructed as a single house in a half-H shape, featuring two gables facing the street. The right gable displays mock timbering and simulated quoins on the upper storey, while the left gable is simply rendered. There is a coved cornice along the middle range.

A wide entry through the middle range has double doors adorned with Gothick pilaster strips. The rest of the ground floor features various 19th-century shop windows with intersecting glazing bars, and a bracketed fascia covers the former jet tied front. On the upper storey, there are two tripartite and two plain sash windows in flush frames, all without glazing bars.

Inside, much of the good quality framing and plain ceiling joists are exposed. The area around the entry has shifted studding and some joists, along with various blocked original windows. There is also a staircase with turned balusters. The long right-hand wing has had its rear roof raised.

No. 10, which is part of the same premises, is structurally linked to another adjoining half-H building that includes No. 11. Its rendered gable faces the street and features two cross windows on the upper storey and one in the attic, all with square hoodmoulds in a Tudor style. The entrance has a six-panelled door with the top two panels glazed. A rear wing contains a small parlour that is entirely lined with square panelling, has a moulded cornice, and features a main ceiling beam with multiple roll-moulding. The room above has a good bolection-moulded surround to the fireplace.
