Description

The United Reformed Church, formerly a Congregational chapel, was built in 1823. It originally served as an Independent chapel. The building is two storeys high and features a galleried interior. The front is constructed of white brick, with roughcast rendering on the sides, and has a slate roof with a wide eaves overhang and a paired modillion cornice. The central section projects slightly, flanked by pilasters at the corners. Two stone bands are present, one below the upper windows' sills and the other framing the ground-floor windows. The windows are small-paned sashes. The ground-floor windows have semi-circular heads with radiating tracery, with deep reveals and semi-circular stone surrounds to the upper-floor windows. The ground-floor windows are set into recesses with stilted stone arches. A recessed central door has six panels, the top two glazed, and a fanlight with radiating glazing-bars. Ornamental cast-iron footscrapers are located on either side of the entrance.
