Description
This is a house located at 2 Fairfield Road, dating from around 1600. It has two storeys and attics, following a basic two-cell end-chimney plan. The structure is timber-framed and roughcast, topped with a plaintiled roof featuring a modillion cornice. There are two gable-end chimney stacks, with one being older than the other.
On the ground storey, there are two canted bay windows, each containing three small-paned sash windows. The upper storey features two mullion-and-transom type casement windows and one dormer. The entrance door is off-centre and half-glazed, adorned with ornate glazing bars, an architrave, and an entablature. Inside, all timbers are exposed; the frame is plain but of good quality. The main beams have chamfers and curved stops, while the joists are chamfered and set flat. Several original windows have been blocked.
The right chimney stack, which connects to the former smithy, is original and features a fireplace on the upper storey with a moulded brick arch and jambs, rendered to simulate stone. In the attic rooms, the exposed roof timbers show three irregular bays, with diminished principals, clasped side purlins, cambered collars, and windbraces, along with assembly marks on the main components.
