Description
The premises of the Co-operative Wholesale Society is a shop with a core dating back to the 16th century, with early 19th century and 20th century front sections. The building has two storeys and an L-shaped plan. The front features two sections, with a jettied left side, and there is a long rear range that extends down Crown & Anchor Lane, which is also partly jettied. It is constructed from timber framing and rendered, topped with plain tiled roofs. The upper storey has small-paned sash windows in flush frames, while the shop front includes 20th century fascias and windows, along with remnants of 19th century pilasters and ornate console brackets. Inside, many of the main timbers have been boxed in, but some principal components are still visible, and the frame appears to be reasonably complete, although the roof is not accessible. The corner-post has been removed, but a boxed-in dragon-beam remains.
