Description

No. 2 and No. 4 Double Street is a house that has been divided into two residences, formerly known as The Farriers' Arms. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and stands two storeys high with attics. There is a small wing at the rear that is contemporary with the front range. The front is made of colourwashed brick with a band, while the sides and rear are constructed of red brick, featuring dark headers in parts, and a tumbled gable on the south-west side. An internal chimney stack has a plain red brick shaft.

The building has four windows, which are small-paned sashes set in flush frames with flat gauged arches, and there is one blank panel on the upper floor. The entrance features two eight-panel fielded doors, with the top two panels being glazed, flanked by panelled pilasters and an entablature. Inside, the main beams are exposed, and there are two large open fireplaces with plain timber lintels associated with the internal chimney stack. The rear wing includes a notable dog-leg staircase with turned balusters, a wreathed handrail, open string, and bracketed ends to the treads. The roof consists of eleven narrow bays, supported by two rows of stepped butt purlins, which have their ends trimmed at the junction with the principal rafters, and assembly marks are visible. The property’s deeds are believed to date back to 1702.
