Description

This building comprises a shop and offices, dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with origins in the medieval period, and altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with some flared brick headers, and has a slate roof. The building is in an L-shape, with a three-story, four-window front. A carriageway is located to the far right, and the remainder of the ground floor has a 20th-century shop front. The first and second floors contain 16-pane sash windows with gauged brick flat-arched heads. Smaller windows are present over the carriageway; the first-floor window has a flat-arched head, and the second-floor window has a wooden lintel. A storey band and cogged brick eaves are also present. A two-story wing extends to the rear left, featuring a plain-tile roof and a brick end stack.

Internally, a stone cellar exists, now infilled. The rear wing has chamfered spine beams and some stop-chamfered joists. A room above the carriageway contains a portion of a 14th-century aisled hall truss set against the party wall, with evidence of smoke blackening. This truss features a massive chamfered and hollow-chamfered cambered collar, arch-braced between presumed aisle posts. The arch braces are cut into the collar and have sunk quadrant mouldings framed by hollow chamfers, with roll mouldings outermost, some of which have been partly hacked back. The main block has a queen posts roof with one tier of purlins.
