Description
The Lower Shop and the Upper Shop is a house that has been converted into two shops. It dates from the 17th century, possibly earlier, and was altered in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and rendered, featuring a plain-tile roof and brick end stacks. It likely originally had a two-unit plan. The structure is two stories tall with an attic and has a three-window range. The main front faces High Street to the south and includes a 20th-century door to the right of center, flanked by a hanging bay window on the left and a canted bay window on the right, both serving as shop windows and covered by a continuous straight hood. There are three-light casement windows on the first floor to the left and right of center, and a small one-light casement window on the far left of the first floor. A central hipped roof dormer window is also present.
Inside, much of the original two and a half bay roof remains, although it has been significantly altered; it originally featured two tiers of wind-braced purlins, collars, and through purlins. The building is situated on a slope. The Lower Shop occupies the ground floor and is accessed from High Street, while the Upper Shop occupies the first and attic floors and is entered from Market Hill.
