Description
Christ's Hospital is a pair of almshouses built in 1897. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with some stone dressings, topped with a half-hipped slate roof featuring ornamental ridge tiles and brick internal stacks. The building is a small two-storey tenement block with an attached stair and balcony providing access to the first floor. It has a three-window range on the front façade. The plank doors, which have two panel mouldings and segmental-arched heads, are located at the far left, left of centre, and to the right, serving both the ground and first floors.
The stair, situated at the far right, features a brick side wall on the ground floor, York stone steps, and an open timber-framed first floor with round-headed arches between the posts. This stair leads to a continuous balcony along the front of the building, supported by timber posts and adorned with a wrought-iron balustrade. To the left, there is a two-storey bay window with a tripartite sash window on both the ground and first floors, and in the center, a two-storey double bay window with similar sash windows. The windows are fitted with flush York stone sills.
The stack nearest to the center of the building is larger than the others and features a prominent memorial stone made of limestone with a shaped pediment. This stone is inscribed with "Founded/ AD 1312," and the main inscription reads: "Refounded by/ Queen Elizabeth/ AD 1597/ Rebuilt/ in the 60th year/ of the reign of/ Queen Victoria/ AD 1897." The almshouses are believed to have been constructed on the site of the Hospital of St Lawrence, which was first mentioned in 1312. Christ's Hospital was originally founded by Queen Elizabeth I to house '36 maimed soldiers' from the Buckinghamshire area, but by the 17th century, it had transitioned to accommodate '7 ancient women.' At the time of its rebuilding, it housed 6 unmarried women and the construction cost was £843 7s 9d.
