Description

The White House is a town house, now used as offices, dating from the mid-18th century and altered in the 20th century. The building is rendered with incised masonry patterns and features a hipped slate roof. It has a double-depth plan and is three stories tall with a five-window range. The entrance consists of six-panel, double-leaf doors that are approached by one stone step and are topped with a fanlight. The doors have a moulded surround with imposts and a round-arched head with a key block, flanked by unfluted Ionic half-columns that support an entablature and pediment, along with a shadow surround featuring sections of the entablature. The original sash windows have been replaced with 20th-century windows on all floors, which also have moulded surrounds. The building includes a plinth, rusticated quoins, storey bands, and bracketed wooden eaves. The three central bays project forward and are topped with a pediment. At the rear right, there is a two-storey wing that features a two-storey canted bay window on the end wall. Inside, there is a central cross passage with a plaster barrel vault and a plaster groin vault leading to the back door. The floor is stone-paved with slate diamonds at the intersections. An oak dogleg staircase leads from the ground floor to the attic, featuring column newels, stick balusters, a ramped handrail, and curved tread ends.
