Description

The Framlingham War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled and dedicated in 1921, with additions for the Second World War and later conflicts. It was designed by Harold Hopper ARIBA from Ipswich and sculpted by George Dale Jnr from Framlingham.

Constructed from Portland stone, the memorial has a square plan. It is located in St Michael’s Churchyard, approximately 11 meters southeast of the south door. The structure features a two-stepped base, a square plinth with inscriptions on all four sides, and a tall shaft that tapers in an octagonal section to a Latin cross head. A relief carving of the Sword of Sacrifice is present on the northeast face.

The main dedicatory inscription is on the northeast face of the plinth, which was re-cut after the Second World War to include the names of 23 individuals who died during that conflict. The inscription reads: "ERECTED BY / THE PARISH OF FRAMLINGHAM / IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF HER CHILDREN / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WARS / 1939 – 1945 / [Names] / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS." The northwest and southeast faces are inscribed with "1914 - 1918," each listing 34 names, while the southwest face records the names of an additional 20 individuals who died during the First World War.

The memorial is set on a contemporary raised gravel bed that is square and bordered by a Portland stone kerb. After the Second World War, a flower bed and flagged footpath were added around it.
