Description
The Angel Inn is a public house dating back to two 16th-century sections, with the right-hand section set slightly back from the main road. It is constructed with a timber frame, plastered in panels, and the left section has a coved eaves cornice. The roof is covered in pantiles. The building is two storeys high. Most of the windows are 20th-century casements. The left section has two windows; the upper floor has 4-light casements, one with 18th-century square-leaded glass divided into two lights, and the ground floor has 5-light windows with a transom. To the right, there are two 3-light first-floor casements and a ground-floor canted bay. There are three 20th-century doorways; two are positioned together, and all have matching classical doorcases and semi-glazed doors. A carriage entrance is located at the extreme right. An internal stack is within the left section.
The older part of the interior, located on the left, has a two-cell layout. A cross-entry is in the right cell and incorporates part of the original plank and muntin screen, featuring a four-centre arched doorway with carved spandrels on both sides. One ground-floor room has chamfered cross-beams, while the other has exposed heavy plain joists. Massive fireplace lintels are also present. At the rear of the right cell, there is an original upper gallery with infilled plain balustrading. Some first-floor framing is exposed. The roof has not been examined. The inn was established and known as the Angel in a survey from 1621.
