Description

No. 9, High Street is a former house, now a shop, dating from the early to mid-16th century. It was refronted and extended in the early 18th century and altered in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed with a brick refronting and addition, and is rendered. It has slate and tiled roofs. Originally comprising two bays facing the road, a parallel block was added to the right. The front has two storeys and three windows. On the ground floor is an entrance to the right, with a 20th-century shop window. Above are three 20th-century casement windows. The front has a double-hipped roof, with a slate front pitch and tiled returns. The left return originally possessed a jetty and retains exposed close studding, along with an original hollow moulded mullioned window frame in the rear bay. There is also a short 20th-century lean-to projection. The rear gable end displays jowled posts and a collar. A lower slate-roofed wing is located to the rear right. The interior features exposed timber framing of large scantling, including stop-chamfered binding beams on the ground floor, a Dragon beam in the left front corner, a clasped purlin roof, curved wind braces, tension braces in the walling, and the base of an early large stack between the two original bays.
