Description
Nos. 17, 17A, and 19 on High Street is a house that has been converted into two dwellings and a shop. It dates from the early to mid-17th century and has been extended and cased in the 18th and 19th centuries, with alterations made in the 20th century. The building has a timber frame core that is cased and extended in red brick, which has been colourwashed, and features tiled roofs. Originally, it consisted of two bays with a gable end facing the road. The 18th-century additions include one bay at a right angle to the rear left and another bay to the right front. The 19th-century additions have filled out the structure into a roughly square block. The building is two storeys high with a three-window front. The central slightly projecting gabled bay is part of the original range and features an entrance with horizontal eight-pane sash windows that have gauged brick flat arched heads. To the left, there is a ground floor shop front and a similar sash window on the first floor. To the right, the building has dentilled eaves, and the roof is hipped to the right. An early stack with a rebuilt cap is now positioned cross-axially on the ridge to the left of the main range. A separately roofed taller bay at the rear left has an exposed cambered tie beam and a clasped purlin roof. Inside, there are jowled posts supporting the cambered tie beams, and the clasped purlin roof features curved windbraces.
